Stanford New Ensemble
The Stanford New Ensemble is an ensemble devoted to performing music of the 20th and 21st centuries. In Fall 2024, SNE formed as a chamber orchestra of 24 musicians to perform György Ligeti's Concerto for Violin and Orchestra (1990/1992) for the 50th Anniversary Celebration of CCRMA, Stanford's Center for Computer Research in Music and Acoustics. Paul Phillips lead this performance, which featured the German violinist Tanja Becker-Bender as soloist and took place on Sunday, 3 November 2024, in Dinkelspiel Auditorium. The orchestra consists of 2 flutes, 1 oboe, 2 clarinets in B-flat, 1 bassoon, 2 horns in F, 1 trumpet in C, 1 tenor trombone, timpani plus 2 percussionists, 5 violins, 3 violas, 2 cellos, and 1 double bass. The flutists double alto flute and alto recorder, piccolo and soprano recorder. The clarinetists double E-flat and bass clarinet. Both clarinetists, plus oboist and bassoonist, double on ocarinas, which were featured in the second movement of the concerto.
